Hui o Wa’a Kaulua Educational Goals
The Hui o Wa’a Kaulua seeks to perpetuate Hawaiian voyaging, wayfinding, and culture through various educational programs.
Educational Needs of our Community
Our programs are currently focused on two community needs that have been identified in schools and which we observe in students who attend our programs:
1. Many students do not readily engage in standard science curricula. Excitement and engagement seem to end at electronic games. Perhaps the gateway to learning is challenging or unfamiliar.
We believe celestial navigation is a natural gateway to astronomy, and voyaging on the ocean an obvious gateway to marine biology and other physical sciences. Our Hui o Wa’a Kaulua hands-on programs introduce students to science by exciting them with the practical science of voyaging.
2. Another observation is that current school curricula, which focus on job-training, tend to devalue history and culture as “not useful.” Our educational programs offer training in traditional practices, using traditional mentoring as a method of teaching.
The wa’a kaulua double hull canoe becomes a “living classroom” to engage students not only in skill building, but also in the affective practice of traditional Hawaiian behavior norms and beliefs such as: laulima cooperation, kokua helping, po’okela excellence, ho’ohana management, malama ‘aina caring for the land, ‘ohana valuing relationships, kuleana responsibility, ho’okipa hospitality, ‘onipa’a steadfastness and ho’omau pursuing despite hardship.
